Apple's dream is over...

Today is the annoucement day of the new iPhone. We were expecting for a completely redesigned iPhone, we were wrong. Like the transition between iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, this year, Apple decided again to announce an upgraded version of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S!

The most significant changes, which were done are:
  • Dual-core A5 processor (same as iPad 2)
  • 8MP camera
  • 1080p video recording
  • Better network performance
  • Voice recognition feature
  • Improved battery life

If you compare new iPhone 4S to Samsung Galaxy SII, you won't see many differences... execpt that Samsung Galaxy SII is already on the market for few months!

Apple's dream is over... while the new iOS 5 is a bunch of Android features (Notification management + bar, voice recognition, OTA, iCloud, etc.), the last few months, we only heart about Apple concerning legal complaints against Google, Samsung, HTC, etc... These legal fights don't help anyone and especially any progress in technologies. Apple has stopped innovating, he started to do like any other competitors: grab some nice features from other solution to incorporate in their own solution.

So yes, Apple's dream is over. In my opinion, Apple has become a standard company, which indeed creates very good products but not amazing products as it was the case when the 1st iPhone was launched. Today, I place in Google and Microsoft my biggest hope to see the next important innovation in mobile sector more than just an upgraded version of an existing mobile device...

Anyway Steve, your creations were amazing, thank you for having been an accelerator for the electronic industry!! May your soul rest in peace...

Android 2.2 coming soon to Nexus One

Officially announced on Twitter by Google, the next version of Android, 2.2 aka Froyo, is going to come to Nexus One in the coming weeks!

It's a very nice news from what we saw during Google I/O as new features on Froyo.

For your information, the exciting things on Froyo, in my opinion, is the performance increase. They announced a 7 time faster Android!! I'm quite enthusiast to see the difference!

Otherwise, we could notice the integration of the flash player 10.1, of the tethering and the capacity to store apps on the external storage (SD card). And finally, for professionals, the add of the Exchange calendar, which was missing in the Android 2.1.

Wikitude Drive: Augmented reality navigation on Android (BETA)

Wikitude, a well know augmented reality (AR) app on Android/iPhone has released in beta version their AR version of GPS navigation, named "Wikitude Drive".

The beta release is limited to the first 2000 users in US only. The full-featured demo sports NAVTEQ map data, both AR street view and 3D map view, worldwide coverage, voice commands, and both driving and walking directions.

For the moment, we don't have any final release date for this app, which will be certainly a new way to navigate with GPS.

More Android devices than iPhone in US

A serious study conducted by NPD Group on a panel of 150'000 consumers pointed out that Android is actually the second more used mobile OS (28%) in US after BlackBerry (36%). iPhone is the third mobile OS with 21%.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Harrison gave a statement about this study:

This is a very limited report on 150,000 US consumers responding to an online survey and does not account for the more than 85 million iPhone and iPod touch customers worldwide. IDC figures show that iPhone has 16.1 percent of the smartphone market and growing, far outselling Android on a worldwide basis. We had a record quarter with iPhone sales growing by 131 percent and with our new iPhone OS 4.0 software coming this summer, we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.

Interesting how Apple is taking such a defensive position...

Keyhole for drunk people

Have you ever gone back home drunk at 5 AM after a big party and tried to get your key in the door? You exactly know what happens: 5 min to succeed in open the door...

Here's a new type of keyhole for drunk people!

New rechargeable battery SCiB - 90% charged in 5 minutes!

Imagine you're going home from work and you're gonna have a dinner in half an hour. Your Android/iPhone/Laptop is going to be out of battery and you only have 10 min to charge it as most as possible.

With current Lithium-Ion technology, going home with 5% battery left and charging it 10 min, you will go out with 10~15% (optimisitic).

With the new Toshiba's battery technology, SCiB (for Super Charge Ion Battery), in only 5 min, you will charge 90% of your battery!!

Moreover, from what Toshiba explains, it's a long life battery: capacity loss after 3000 charge-discharge cycles is less than 10%. Achieves more than 6000 charge-discharge cycles.

Very interesting battery technology we would like to see as soon as possible in an industrial device, especially in mobile ones.
